For George Lewis

For George Lewis

Partnering with the acclaimed and venturesome chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound, composer and 2017 MacArthur Fellow Tyshawn Sorey presents an epic long-form work dedicated to his mentor George Lewis. It’s a nearly hour-long piece that defies classification, much as Lewis himself does. The tonal blends and sonorities are slowly enveloping, mysterious, conducive to close and immersive listening. Sorey cites “The Will to Adorn,” which Lewis released with the International Contemporary Ensemble in 2017, as a main inspiration. But For George Lewis is, in fact, a double album, paired with Autoschediasms (Live), another Alarm Will Sound collaboration that owes more to improvisatory concepts developed by Anthony Braxton and the late Butch Morris. Taking on board methods and insights from these great teachers, Sorey continues to evolve his own world of sound.
