Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 / C.P.E. Bach: Symphonies, Wq 175 & 183/17

Continuing their Beethoven symphony series, the AAM Berlin pair Beethoven’s first two symphonies with two by J.S. Bach’s most famous son, C.P.E. Full of energy and invention, they make a fascinating juxtaposition, and while Beethoven’s First Symphony declares its arrival with drama, C.P.E. Bach’s elegance also contains its fair share of theatricality. Bernhard Forck, directing from the first desk of violins, offers performances of distinction, aided by some terrific playing by this superb Berlin ensemble. The way he unfolds the opening of Beethoven’s Second is wonderfully engaging.
