Made In Chicago (Live At the Chicago Jazz Festival 2013)

In the mid-'60s, drummer Jack DeJohnette moved from Chicago to New York, where he played with giants such as Miles Davis and Bill Evans and recorded many albums as a leader. But before he left his hometown, he worked with fellow Chicagoans Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, and Henry Threadgill. This album, which reunites these wonderful musicians, was recorded live in 2013. (Bassist Larry Gray, another Chicago native, rounds out the band.) All four are distinctive composers, and it’s great to hear everything—mysterious chamber music, artful cacophony, insistent repetition—come together. The crowd’s loving response doesn’t surprise.
