On Bigstar Johnson’s long-awaited debut album, the champion of Vuzu’s The Hustle competition focuses on melodic, memorable songs that are firmly rooted in vintage hip-hop. For “Two Cups”, he and guest rapper Rouge rhyme over jazzy piano and a Donell Jones-inspired chorus. “Sgubu” is a swinging track with a TKZee influence, “Special Assignment” floats somewhere between dancehall and Afrobeats and “Paradise” finds Bigstar unloading a fusillade of punchline-heavy bars.
