Gathering Light

Reedist and bass clarinet specialist Oran Etkin is known for his global approach to jazz. Here he’s joined by a spectacular group—guitarist Lionel Loueke, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, bassist Ben Allison, and drummer Nasheet Waits—for a set long on imaginative originals, as well as reworkings of far-flung source material. The latter includes folk melodies inspired by time in Indonesia (“Gambang Suling”), Israel (“Shirim ad Kan”), and Japan (the hard-grooving “Takeda [Homesick Blues]”). Once a student of the legendary Tuba Fats, Etkin finds a rich vein of inspiration in a loving take on the Crescent City classic “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South.” Standout original cuts include the playful duet (between Allison and Etkin) called “All I Really Want to Do Is Dance!,” the earthy “Scattering Light” (with Etkin on tenor sax), and the uptempo group effort “Gratitude.” The album’s title refers to a story about the divine light of primordial man being shattered and flung across the globe—Etkin does a fine job of bringing those pieces back together for this luminous musical whole.
