In Återvända, the Swedish word for “return,” pianist/composer Peter Sandberg takes family separation and reunion as his inspiration for a series of beautifully, skillfully crafted piano tracks. Many are refracted through shimmering, ethereal electronic effects, including “Narrow” and “Kväll,” which evoke a sense of stasis and anticipation, while Sandberg brings us home with the coruscating orchestral richness of the pop-inspired “What If” and “In Seven,” both balms for the soul. The simple, unadorned beauty of “Hope” and “Treasure” are stunning moments of personal reflection in an album that, ultimately, looks to the future with optimism.
