With the thunderous guitars of co-founder/composer Vladimir Holstinin and the power vocals of Valery Kipelov, Aria started their upward trajectory in 1985. Turbulent personnel changes followed, but also sweeping success. The band delivered classics like 1987's Hero of Asphalt, released by the Soviet label Melodiya, whose stamp of approval helped to propel them to major stadium fame. Aria's well-crafted lyrics and visionary melodies have given them a unique edge in metal, while their epic instrumentals, often cutting through sprawling narratives, have ensured their cult status.
