Over a long and varied career, Sky Wu has released an array of records restlessly exploring a variety of styles but pivoting around his crisp and clear vocal tones. Taking its cues from the gauzy soft pop and New Wave glamour of the decade, his mid-'80s debut featured tender ballads, with a focus on next-level synth keys that suspended them in ethereal atmospheres. From that base, his sound struck out to new territories, incorporating jazz, funk—with bass licks and rhythm sections in constant flux—and which ran the gamut between Latin-inspired percussion, jittery techno and programmed beats.
