Huang Zi Essentials

Huang Zi Essentials

A native of Shanghai who received his music training at Yale University, Zi Huang was immensely influential as a composer, music theoretician and educator in the 1930s. In his symphonic and choral works, he integrated Chinese scales with Western functional harmony and pursued cross-cultural thematic fusion. His body of art songs—settings of well-known poems—adapted classical forms to the textures and rhythms of the Chinese language.
