Don't be fooled by Cheer Chen's bubbly name and candy-sweet vocals: this whimsical singer-songwriter is one of Mandopop's most talented indie musicians. The Taipei-born artist first started making music in the ‘90s with the underground band Sunscreen, releasing her first studio album Think Twice in 1998. She followed that with an impressive six albums over the course of 10 years—for which she crafted the bulk of her own music and lyrics. While she does not actively flaunt it, Chen's musical prowess is unmistakeable. 2006 saw her album Peripeteia winning the Best Music Album Producer and Best Music Video awards at the 17th Golden Melody Awards. In the same year, she was also nominated for Best Female Singer and Best Album of the Year. While her style might have evolved and matured since then—as seen most obviously in the work of “The Verse”, the experimental electronica band Chen formed with Tiger Chung and Chien-Chi Chen in 2012—it is certain that she hasn't lost any of her clout or appeal.
