In the '90s, the underground went mainstream. Nirvana's breakthrough success led to other punk-influenced bands like L7, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, Sleater-Kinney and Hole receiving levels of airplay that were previously unheard of. Elsewhere, traditional singer/songwriters like Lucinda Williams, Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge roughed up their sound.
