The outsider gospel of Kortney Jamaal Pollard sounds as if it spans centuries. Ever since the independently released The Coming and The 2econd Coming made him a word-of-mouth sensation in the late 2000s, the artist known as Mali Music has demonstrated a mysterious ability to move gracefully between ’60s-inspired soul, banging hip-hop jams and folk songs haunted by 19th-century spirituals. His God-given gifts have caught the ears of his fellow musicians: in addition to piling up distinctive solo hits like 2014’s “Beautiful”, Pollard has worked with gospel kingpin Kirk Franklin as well as Christian rapper Aaron Cole.
