Previously using the voice synthesiser software Vocaloid to dress up his J-rock compositions, Japanese producer n-buna saw his music take on a whole new dimension with the addition of flesh-and-blood singer suis. Using a deceptively simple formula—driving drums and power-pop guitars, woven with bittersweet piano lines, building tension towards cathartic choruses—their partnership has yielded astonishing results, while resonating with a huge social media fanbase. That’s helped by their exceptionally introspective lyrics and slice-of-life snapshots that contrast the brightness of their melodies.
