Peret Essentials

He was born Pedro Pubill Calaf to Romani parents in the Catalonian region of Mataró, but by the time the guitarist and singer Peret closed out the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, he was revered as one of Spain's most dynamic interpreters of gypsy-derived song. His breakout mid-'60s singles epitomised the fluid integration of flamenco and Latin American rhythms known as Catalan rumba, stacking bongos and güiro alongside electric guitars and rocking basslines. Topped by declamatory vocals that lost no force as he neared his eighth decade, Peret's Mediterranean party music defines Spanish cool.
