About Beverly Kenney
One of the most gifted of '50s jazz singers, Beverly Kenney is mostly unknown to the general public. She released her debut LP SINGS FOR JOHNNY SMITH on the Roost label in 1956. Following this, a big band session, COME SWING WITH ME, arranged by Ralph Burns, and 1957's SINGS WITH JIMMY JONES & THE BASIE-ITES were released before she made the move to Decca in 1958. There she recorded her finest work, including SINGS FOR PLAYBOYS, accompanied by the legendary pianist Ellis Larkins, and 1959's BORN TO BE BLUE. Possessed of a light, musical voice and near-perfect intonation, Kenney was poised for even greater success when chronic depression interfered with her growing career momentum. Sadly, the singer committed suicide in 1960 at the age of 28.
