How many moments of diva bliss can British Columbia-born Jayda Guy pack into a single set? Let this recording of her performance at Amsterdam’s Dekmantel Festival be a test. Most obvious is the spine-tingling “Everybody Everybody”, a Le Freak mix of Black Box from the early ’90s in which Martha Wash begs, with gospel choir muscle, to be set free. Then there’s Guy's own “Diva Bitch”, a then not-yet-released collaboration with Alexa Dash that lays punchy, bossy vocals (“Get down on your knees!”) over retro synth fuzz. The penultimate moment, a Terrence Parker “Divine Spiritual” remix of Loleatta Holloway’s “Dreamin’”, practically explodes with fever, emotion and howls. By the time Guy gets to the finale, she’s stripped you of your inhibitions and earned the right to play TLC’s “Creep” in its entirety.
