Barra 69 (Ao Vivo Na Bahia, No Teatro Castro Alves)

This live album was recorded at Salvador’s Teatro Castro Alves in July 1969, just before Brazil’s government forced Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil into exile in England. Having already been briefly jailed for their political defiance, the artists were in no mood to make nice. Backed by a young band called Os Leifs (featuring then-unknown guitarist Pepeu Gomes, later of Os Novos Baianos), Veloso and Gil injected rebellious passion into even the most sedate material. (See “Domingo No Parque”.) More uptempo songs like “Cinema Olympia” and “Atrás do Trio Elétrico” almost have a punk edge, with Gomes’ wild psychedelic guitar dominating the textures. Although the live conditions of the recording resulted in limited fidelity, this concert’s historical and musical value remains unquestionable.
