The Chairs: Keep Rollin’ On in 2021

“We’ve already got through 2020; the only road left is forward,” The Chairs’ singer and guitarist Zhong tells Apple Music. While it’s more relevant than ever today, it’s been the band’s mindset for a while. Their 2018 single “Rollin’ On”—about approaching life with a breezy, roll-with-it attitude—was inspired by co-vocalist and guitarist Jin’s experiences as a former social worker aiding a disease-stricken, economically disadvantaged population, and the theme continues here with their Chinese New Year playlist. “There are still many beautiful sides of humanity, and I hope we can see more of it in the new year,” Zhong says. Like so many others, The Chairs had to cancel their 2020 plans, which included touring in the US, Australia, Japan and South Korea. Instead, they appeared on the second season of The Big Band, a Chinese music competition that aims to elevate underground bands to the mainstream. It was a blessing in disguise for the group. During the 20 days they spent in quarantine before entering Beijing to participate in the contest, they wrote songs incuding “For L From the Moon”. Famous for folksy strings, cheerful lyrics and love poems, The Chairs bring a unique, retro romanticism to their indie sound, and this sunny playlist shows off the group’s influences. Bassist Benson’s choices include Vulfpeck, which he considers a creative inspiration, as well as GARNiDELiA and Ryokuoushoku Shakai. Zhong’s picks include Korean and Japanese soul acts like Se So Neon, CAR, THE GARDEN and Lucky Kilimanjaro, while Jin’s selections feature early C-pop from the 1940s and ’50s. “Playlists are something you put on when you’re casually folding laundry, driving around or enjoying your shower, right?” he says. “It’s supposed to be relaxing.” After six months away from home, the band is now excited to head back and unwind. “We wish our fans a peaceful new year, and may all your wishes come true,” Jin says, quoting a line from their song “Tree House”.
