There's plenty of groove in Phil Lam's interpretation of Cantopop. Much of that has to do with the Vancouver-born vocalist's predilection for adding touches of saxophone to his arrangements—but instrumentation aside, Lam sets himself apart from other acts on the competitive Hong Kong music scene with polished songcraft set against masterfully executed production. Elegant jazz flourishes may be his trademark, but Lam knows how to kick things up a notch with the occasional inclusion of synth and funk, making him one young, versatile act to look out for.
