Eric Chou: A New Year for You & Me

Having shot to fame with his ending theme for the TV series The Way We Were, Taiwanese singer/songwriter Eric Chou has shown off a range of true creative talent despite his young age. He’s becoming an icon in the C-pop scene with his expressive love songs, so catchy that they never fail to turn into massive hits. Eric uses the holiday to relax and unwind—and to eat, of course. He says, “Chinese New Year is a day to reunite with your family and eat hot pot and delicious food.” It’s difficult to argue with that. Traditions play an important role in the way Eric’s family celebrates Spring Festival. Their unique custom involves a special connection with the colour red. “Every time I go out or see a relative, I have to wear something red. I think it’s really fun, and every year I like to wear red sweaters and coats. I take it seriously. I really think about what to wear and how to dress,” says Eric. “As a kid we used to set off firecrackers in the alley with my cousins. It was so much fun for us kids to kind of create a New Year’s atmosphere. I feel nostalgic thinking about it.” Of course the New Year is a time for music, too. Eric unwinds with the sounds of the New Year: “For me, the New Year sounds very relaxing. Stress that builds up throughout the year can be let go during the holiday. The New Year is a good time to enjoy with your family.” As to what songs he’s chosen for 2020? “The songs I chose for my playlist will all sound relaxing. I listen to music during the New Year that I listen to in daily life…if there’s a theme song for 2020, I would choose ‘Forever Beautiful’ and I wish all to be beautiful—physically, mentally and spiritually.” For his fans and listeners, Eric sends a special wish: “I wish all a Happy Year of the Rat. And may all have good fortune in the Year of Rat!”
