Formed in 1995, CPM 22’s brand of melodic hardcore inflected with the earnestness of second-wave emo really struck a chord with the Brazilian underground. By the early Aughts, the São Paulo band had broke through to the mainstream, distilling their well-developed knack for irrepressible hooks and anthemic choruses into joyously charging pop-punk—and the occasional foray into skank-happy ska. Yet it’s the power of their chugging dual-guitar riffs and frontman Badauí’s impassioned vocals that really set them apart.
