Slade Essentials

Slade's glam rock is every bit as big and loud as their platform boots and plaid pants. Their string of early-'70s smashes stick to a cleverly simple attack: Noddy Holder's primitive roar flanked by shouted choruses and beats wrapping '50s boogie inside metallic crunch. The bass-thumping “Cum On Feel the Noize” is their calling card, hitting like a sledgehammer; not far behind is “Gudbuy T'Jane,” which oozes greasy swing. Slade continued their dominance of British pop into the '80s thanks to stadium anthems like “Run Runaway,” a riotous jig bursting with fuzz riffs and electric violin.
