After seven years without releasing a studio album, 1987’s In the Dark became a surprise late-career hit for the Dead, making the band more popular than ever with its polished, well-worn sound. The bluesy "West L.A. Fadeaway" and the amiable, roots-rocking "Touch of Grey" are as warm and folky as anything the band has done, with some of their most concise and appealing arrangements since the early ‘70s.
