About Joe Tex
With strong ties to gospel, Joe Tex's '60s soul combined gritty funk with earnest preaching. His singing fearlessly swooped into upper registers, one moment smooth, and the next rough. He knew how to heat up and hold a crowd, skills he also used in his other occupation as a minister. He was a member of the soul supergroup the Soul Clan, which also featured Solomon Burke, Arthur Conley, Ben E. King, and Don Covay. Tex's career slowed considerably in the 1970s following a conversion to Islam, and in 1982 he died of a heart attack. He is still acknowledged as one of soul music's most energetic performers.
