By the time singer Glenn Danzig formed his eponymous group in 1987, he was already an underground icon, having made his name as the frontman of legendary horror-punk bands the Misfits and Samhain. For his new act, he fused the slow-burning intensity of preeminent hard rockers like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple to a southern-fried doom-groove, then let his own surprisingly soulful vocals do the rest. Though many sidemen have come and gone during the band's long lifespan, Danzig himself remains one of metal's most charismatic presences as he keeps on recording, touring and tirelessly invoking the beast.
