Fred Fortin Essentials

While he's had a part in the success of bands like Galaxie and Gros Mené, Fred Fortin is best known as a multi-instrument-slinging troubadour—but he's not your everyday singer/songwriter. Since the Québecer released his first album, Joseph Antoine Frédéric Fortin Perron (his real name), in 1996, he's been working an array of instruments and styles into his scrappy, rough-hewn tunes. Banjos, bass guitars, brushed snares and more than a hint of snarling attitude drive these funky, folky, jazz- and country-flecked tracks. Explore his singular Franco-Canadian voice with this selection of some of his best cuts.
