Nija: Future Generation

This Black History Month, the youth are taking centre stage as we spotlight those who give us hope for the future and where they will lead us. Among such artists is songwriter and producer Nija Charles, who, at only 23, has worked on 12 Grammy-nominated records and landed two Hot 100 toppers in “Rain on Me” (Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande) and “positions” (Ariana Grande). Her handpicked playlist includes more tracks she’s worked on and plenty of others that have inspired her, like Roddy Ricch’s “Intro”, which she says she listens to daily. “I relate to Roddy in a way where we’re both young and members of Forbes 30 Under 30, and through our music and success, we’re able to help shape the culture of the future generation,” she tells Apple Music. “The song starts out very musical, with him talking about where he started, and when the music changes—it’s like a sonic representation of his progression. The way he made this song was extremely innovative and will inspire even more elevation in hip-hop.” Similarly, she includes The Weeknd’s “After Hours” for its musicality as well. “The Weeknd, himself, is breaking down boundaries and joining genres together, which definitely inspires every creative,” she says. “This song in particular has three different transitions, which is insane. It’s clear with this song—mixing alternative, R&B and pop in one song—he doesn’t know any rules and just does what he likes, which is so badass.” If you hear something you like, be sure to add it to your library.
