Tired of waiting for MF DOOM to get back into the studio, producer Madlib takes things into his own hands on the follow-up to their 2004 collaboration, Madvillainy, laying the rapper’s old verses over a collection of new beats. By operating solo, he's openned the door to new forms of experimentation: He loops a tuneless woodwind flute on the thrilling “Pearls” and matches DOOM’s gruff croons to the hard-rocking boom bap of “Drainos”, before chopping up some hazy, smoked-out jazz on “Boulder Holder”.
