Jax Jones: My LNY Party

The festive season is all about love, and Lunar New Year is no exception. World-renowned DJ Jax Jones curates a party playlist just for this special occasion. Born to a Malaysian Chinese mother, celebrating Lunar New Year is a big part of Jax Jones’s heritage. Even though the DJ calls London home, he travels back to Malaysia frequently to partake in Lunar New Year traditions, which include giving and receiving red envelopes, and preparing a delicious feast for all the family to enjoy. “I used to travel back to Malaysia to see my Kungkung and Popo who are sadly not alive anymore, so now it is about remembering them and knowing they still watch over us with the rest of our ancestors.” Jax Jones tells Apple Music. “Often when I was younger, around 12 years old, I would travel on my own from London to Malaysia and the air hostess would take me to the pilot’s cockpit as a special surprise to celebrate LNY.” “I think we are very similar to most Chinese families as we make a special effort to have a reunion,” says Jax. “We have a beautiful feast of delicious food and give each other hongbao.” As for music, it’s no surprise that Jax Jones is the life of the party. “Lunar New Year for me is to celebrate love with my family and friends, and as a DJ, the best way for me to share love with everyone is through my music and putting on the best party possible.” “My theme song [for 2020] would be the theme song to Swords Man 2 that features Jet Li. I used to watch this film repeatedly before bedtime with my Kungkung and we would sing this song all day long,” Jax Jones reminisces. “It’s a wonderful song of hope.” Not one to miss out on the tradition of wishing people Happy New Year, Jax Jones has a message for all his listeners: “I pray everyone is able to give and receive as much love as possible this year and to know how to appreciate the people that are close to them.”
