Indie Disco

Indie Disco

Indie disco’s seeds may have been planted in the late-’70s post-punk era, with bands like ESG, Liquid Liquid and Gang of Four giving punk a funky, danceable bassline while preserving its jagged edges. But the style really took root in the early 2000s, when New York boomed with indie bands reinterpreting the sound (think LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and Hercules & Love Affair) while adding synth and drum-machine flourishes of house and techno to really propel the music forward. Today, artists like LA’s The Dare, London’s Charli xcx and Isle of Wight’s Wet Leg have only widened indie disco’s definition, giving it a bit more sass and attitude and driving electronic beats.
