The heavy metal of Huntress—combining relentless thrash with nods to the classic sounds of the genre—is rendered even more incendiary by their most dangerous weapon: operatically trained frontwoman Jill Janus. Since forming in 2009, the California band have unleashed doomy and dark hellraisers like the witch-conjuring “Eight of Swords” and “Spell Eater”, in which Janus reveals her multi-octave range with gritty screams and hair-raising high notes. They dip into prog, too: on “Alpha Tauri”, Janus weaves a wild tale featuring psychic transmissions, beings in lavender cloaks and travelling via spaceship.
