About Man or Astro-Man?
Formed in 1992, instrumental surf rock quartet Man or Astroman? offered a unique blend of new wave, sci-fi themes, classic surf rock, and experimental sounds. Between 1993 and 2000 the group recorded 10 albums, including their 1993 debut IS IT…MAN OR ASTROMAN?, 1996’s EXPERIMENT ZERO, and 2001’s A SPECTRUM OF FINITE SCALE. Each featured the band’s retro-futuristic sound, while also mixing in samples, and instruments such as the theremin and tesla coil. Man or Astroman? were also known for their oblique stage names/personas (such as Birdstuff and Coco the Electronic Monkey Wizard), as well as tricks such as their “clone project,” where they sent a group of different musicians to tour under their name.
