Skank Essentials

Since 1991, singer Samuel Rosa has led his band Skank in many directions—and always away from what's expected. After an initial brush with traditional Brazilian styles and dancehall, Skank transformed their sound with an amalgam of lush melodies and compelling Britpop. They found their biggest success in 1996's O Samba Poconé and continued to dominate the next two decades with their punchy sing-alongs, tropical rhythms and brassy, horn-led grooves. Rosa has said that he'd rather Skank sound strange than stale—and these cuts are as undeniably surprising as they are fresh.
