Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical epic Padmaavat beat out controversy to get its delayed, but highly anticipated, release—and the music made it worth the wait. Bhansali, one of a handful of Bollywood filmmakers who composes his own soundtracks, lays out six lushly orchestrated compositions to enhance his period drama. Shreya Ghoshal’s graceful vocal on “Ghoomar” and Neeti Mohan’s light, playful soprano on “Nainowale Ne” soar over a musical landscape of sitar and tabla, and Arijit Singh’s plaintive, husky voice lends a folky realism to “Binte Dil”.
