About Giovanni Battista Sammartini

Giovanni Battista Sammartini (ca. 1700-1775) was an Italian composer of the early Classical period, known for his significant role in the development of the symphony. Breaking decisively from Baroque style, Sammartini adopted the stile galante, and composed his symphonies in a two- or three-movement form, distinct from the Baroque operatic overture or the instrumental dance suite. His impact on other composers of the era, including Gluck, Boccherini, and Haydn, is obvious, though the latter composer denied any direct influence. Among Sammartini's authenticated compositions are 67 symphonies, 31 concertos, and large number of chamber works, including several sonatas.
