Marshall Crenshaw: Next Steps

Although he was sometimes pigeonholed as a nice-guy Buddy Holly disciple (as his cover of Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" suggests), Marshall Crenshaw was also a fine guitarist who could bring major attitude to the studio. The masterful songwriter practically defines power pop in the woozy "Fantastic Planet of Love," and late-career track "Stormy River" features one of rock's more tastefully gnarly solos.
