Igor Levit Essentials

Russian-born, German-raised piano virtuoso Igor Levit launched his career in the 2010s with bold choices, recording Beethoven’s complete sonatas at 27 and daring to include Frederic Rzewski’s starkly modern “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” alongside Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. In spring 2020 he performed all 840 repetitions of Satie’s Vexations in a single 15-hour marathon. His playing is likewise audacious, injecting assumptions about Beethoven’s intent in his often-galloping tempos for the sonatas, and embracing improvisation on parts of the Rzewski or Bill Evans’ “Peace Piece.”
