Indie pop took a backseat throughout much of the first half of the '90s as grunge, rave, alt-rock and Britpop crossed over and dominated independent music circles. By the middle of the decade, however, acts like The Magnetic Fields, Belle & Sebastian and Saint Etienne had succeeded in carving out a slice of the music world for themselves.
