By the middle of the '80s, smart record companies were turning to low-powered American college radio stations that were breaking new bands all by themselves. Smart DJs plugged into the burgeoning indie underground were the first to play future stars like R.E.M., whose debut single "Radio Free Europe" felt like the calling card of the entire scene.
