Saho Terao Essentials

Saho Terao’s deep discography owes much to the riveting '70s piano pop of Carole King and Carly Simon: intimate and confessional yet also playful and self-effacing. But the Japanese songstress really makes her mark by contemporising that sound. Often it’s just her voice with a piano, sometimes with a backing band, but Terao is unafraid to tinker with the production by adding additional colour, layers and textures—an acoustic guitar here, a clown’s horn there. More recent songs have seen her explore disco funk, with her breathy vocals lighting above burbling bass and warm Fender Rhodes notes.
