About Elizeth Cardoso

A Brazilian singer whose 1958 CANCAO DO AMOR DEMAIS is considered to be the very first bossa nova album, Elizeth (also Elizete) Cardosa had a highly succesful career that long predated the rise of the newer music in the late '50s. In fact much like Carmen Miranda before her, Cardosa was considered one of the premier interpreters of samba, the preeminent Brazilian music before (and after) bossa nova. Despite this fact, Cardosa's most recognizable performance outside Brazil, is her rendition of Luis Bonfa's "Manha da Carnaval" on the 1959 ORFEU NEGRO (BLACK ORPHEUS) soundtrack, for which she dubbed the vocals of the actress Marpessa Dawn, who starred in the classic film.
