Like his brother and regular collaborator Armaan, composer Amaal Mallik wears his legacy lightly. In just a few short years, the third-generation music director—he’s the grandson of Sardar Malik, son of Daboo Malik and nephew of Anu Malik—has staked out a spot for himself in the highly competitive Hindi film industry. And as this mix of soulful ballads and sprightly uptempo tracks affirms, the versatile creative did it in a fittingly old-school fashion: by placing equal emphasis on melody, lyrics and live instrumentation.
