Orchestre Andalou D'israel with Jo Amar

Jo Amar spent his career introducing Sephardic liturgical music to the Israeli mainstream, and his recordings with Ashdod's Israeli Andalusian Orchestra are his masterworks. The Moroccan cantor's nine-track 2000 release is a gorgeous, spirited collection of Middle Eastern sounds: plangent violins, blistering darbukas and fast-picked strings, with Amar's expressive vocals painting vivid tableaus. This is late night music made for a dance in the desert—Negev, Sahara or otherwise.
