YUNDI: Chinese New Year Time

For classical pianist YUNDI, Chinese New Year means “reuniting with family and starting afresh”, he tells Apple Music. The musician became the youngest-ever winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition when he was 18, and still fondly recalls the memories and traditions from his childhood. “My personal Chinese New Year tradition is eating jiaozi (Chinese dumplings). Sometimes I have had to work on Chinese New Year’s Eve and couldn’t get together with my family. Jiaozi reminds me of precious family time.” YUNDI has created a classical Chinese New Year playlist, featuring compositions by Chopin (including a piece from his new album, Chopin: Piano Concertos), Mahler, Bach, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as pop classics by Faye Wong and Jay Chou. “For me, Chinese New Year stands for family, hope and happiness,” he says. “The songs I chose bring out these feelings when I listen to them.” YUNDI has shared a holiday wish alongside his playlist: “In Chinese, the character ‘fu’ not only means success in one’s career—it’s a state of satisfaction and contentment on all levels. So, I wish for everyone to have good fortune.”
