Elvis Costello’s 1991 album arrived in the middle of what he wryly refers to as his “beard years”. He let his hair down stylistically, too, adopting brooding Leonard Cohen-esque folk on “After the Fall” and Beach Boys-style harmonies to deliver cutting lyrics on “The Other Side of Summer”, while “So Like Candy” sputters and sparks to the strains of vibrato guitar and lost love.
