About Bola Sete
Bola Sete was a Brazilian guitarist whose highly improvisational style weds Brazilian styles to flamenco, classical, jazz, American folk, bossa nova, and pop. He cut half-a-dozen albums for Odeon before leaving Brazil in 1959. In 1962, he issued Bossa Nova for Fantasy. 1963's Vince Guaraldi, Bola Sete and Friends was the first of several albums that Guaraldi and Sete collaborated on. In 1967, Verve released Bola Sete at the Monterey Jazz Festival; it made the jazz charts. He released Workin' on a Groovy Thing in 1971, and Goin' to Rio in 1973. The solo set Ocean appeared from Takoma in 1975. Sete's last album, Jungle Suite, appeared in 1985. After his death, his widow Anne Sete set up the Samba Moon label, which issued 2004's Live at Grace Cathedral and other titles. In 2021, Tompkins Square released Samba in Seattle [Live at the Penthouse 1966-1968], comprised of unreleased trio concerts.
