The Make-Up Essentials

Washington D.C.'s The Make-Up were formed out of the ashes of frontman Ian Svenonius' previous band, Nation of Ulysses. The quartet's garage-meets-soul sound was underpinned by their “Gospel Yeh-Yeh” philosophy, which advocated personal liberation and anti-capitalism. The Make-Up blazed their own unique trail in the indie landscape with Svenonius' charismatic presence and their electrifying live shows and lo-fi approach. After five well-received albums in as many years, the band split and Svenonius went on to form similarly incendiary outfits, such as Chain & The Gang.
