Subway Sect Essentials

The first iteration of Vic Godard's Subway Sect formed in 1976 and cut some of the great early punk singles. Godard put together a new lineup in 1980 and their D.I.Y. mix of northern soul, rockabilly and rat pack crooning went nowhere commercially but was championed by post-punks and early indie-pop bands like Orange Juice. Godard left the music business to become a postman in 1985 but returned in the ‘90s, releasing a string of charmingly idiosyncratic solo and Subway Sect albums right into the 2010s, filtering everything from jazz to electronica through his unique worldview.
