Simply Red's 30-year output never strays too far from the plushness of Philly soul—particularly in the spiralling strings of 2015's “The Ghost of Love” and the irrepressible disco of “Shine On”. However, the outer reaches of Mick Hucknall's music taste also betray an affection for deep reggae (“Model”), ‘60s pop (“Go Now”) and brassy Curtis Mayfield-style funky rock (“Oh! What a Girl!”).
