Kelvin Boakye raps so proficiently and swaggeringly in English, you’d be forgiven for thinking he hails from Houston instead of Hanover. But the moniker Serious Klein is a giveaway—as are his heart-tugging tales of experience as the son of first-generation Ghanaians in Germany, and how rap became not only a lifeline but a path to international renown. While cuts such as “91 Flex” and “Voodoo Money” make excellent use of Boakye’s urgent, fastidious rapping set to claustrophobic beats, the likes of “God Is Love” slow things down to reveal his sunnier side.
